What is Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) or LED therapy, is light therapy that delivers concentrated red and infrared light to your body’s cells.

RLT (Red Light Therapy) refers to light therapy from LEDs that emit wavelengths of natural red light, which is visible to the human eye, as well as infrared light, which is invisible to humans.
Red light therapy does not depend on heat, which is a significant difference between treatments with heat-based products such as an infrared sauna, traditional sauna, or other forms of heat therapy. RLT uses natural light that delivers the same therapeutic red, infrared wavelengths as natural sunlight. This differs from artificial light treatments such as sunbathing or light therapy from a lamp.

Red light therapy technology

Red light therapy has been popular in professional and clinical settings for a number of years. In fact, light technology has been used in medicine for decades. NASA experimented with red light therapy as far back as the 1980s and 1990s.
However, in recent years it has become far more widespread and popular for home use, thanks to breakthroughs in LED technology. Major advances in clinical light therapy research and increased public interest in natural health technologies have also contributed to the growing use and popularity of red light therapy.

Heat Sense RLT products deliver light therapy using quality LEDs to project red, infrared wavelengths of light. The light emitted is like the wavelengths of light that your body needs from natural sunlight, but without the heat or harmful UV rays.

There are primarily 3 benefits:

  • Increased mitochondrial function
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Reduced oxidative stress.

Mitochondrial function:
Red light therapy increases our energy production at a cellular level, specifically in the mitochondria – the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell. The natural red and infrared light improves cellular respiration, which creates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy, often called the “energy currency of life.”

Blood circulation:
Blood circulation is one of the most vital functions in the body. It is through blood circulation that essential nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the brain and the rest of the body. Red light improves blood flow by stimulating the production of nitric oxide (NO) in our cells.

Oxidative stress:
Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in our body. Free radicals are harmful molecules that are naturally formed through metabolic activities, such as digestion and exercise. Antioxidants play a central role in counteracting free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. Uncontrolled levels of oxidative stress can lead to cell damage and accelerate the body’s aging process. Red light therapy can reduce oxidative stress, preventing further damage to cells and premature death, by upregulating the production of antioxidant enzymes.

The mechanisms of red light therapy can also lead to a positive effect on mental acuity, sleep quality, skin health, muscle recovery, brain health, inflammation, and joint pain, among many other aspects, to optimize one’s overall health.

In particular, our infrared lasers are good for pain management
